By now you have begun to notice
some changes in your own body and in
your friends' bodies. You may be spend-
ing a lot of time thinking and talking
about these changes. Sometimes you
might feel strange or embarrassed as
new things happen; other times you may
wish new things would happen sooner.
All of these feelings are normal. Re-
member that your body knows what is
best for you, and you will eventually
get used to all these new things. You
will like your grown-up body, as it
will be just right for you.
You may already be seeing and feel-
ing some of the changes you will expe-
rience during puberty: 1your voice be-
gins to crack and then deepen; your
shoulders broaden; chest and facial
hair starts growing; pubic hair gets
thick and curly; and the penis and
testes grow larger. You will also be
able to ejaculate.]
This is can be a mixed-up time to
go through. Your voice may change at
embarrassing times. 2You may get erec-
tions for no reason. You may ejaculate
in your sleep (called a wet dream or
nocturnal emission) and not even know
it happened.] You may feel embarrassed
because of the sticky spots on the
bed sheets.
2It is OK to feel strange about all
this.] It is also OK to talk with your
dad or older brother about this because
they went through it too. Your mom too
will understand, she knows how you feel
-- she knows that all boys go through
this on their way to becoming men. Re-
member, as your body adjusts to its
grown-up hormones and grown-up shape,
it will act normal again.
3Something else that is hard for
many boys at this time is that most
girls have grown and matured faster
than they have.] The girls in your
classes may be taller and stronger than
you. They may have already started to
experience some of their changes, or
had more time to adjust to them. Some-
times boys feel left behind, and don't
want to have much to do with girls.
This is OK. You will feel differently
when your body catches up with the
girls'.

1All of the following may happen during
puberty: change in voice, wet dreams,
and more hair on the bodies and pubic
area.
$
2A wet dream is embarrassing; it means
the boy cannot control himself.

1It is normal for girls to develop
faster than boys.

You have already learned a lot
about puberty and how boys and girls
start to mature. You may have mixed
feelings about the changes, sometimes
wishing they would happen more quickly,
and sometimes wishing they wouldn't
happen at all. This is perfectly nor-
mal. Just as your body is getting used
to growing up, you are getting used to
changes in the way you feel. 1It is OK
to talk with your parents or older
brothers and sisters about these chan-
ges,] as they have all felt the same
way you do. Your friends are probably
feeling the same way, too.
You remember that some of the chan-
ges you can anticipate are the cracking
and deepening of the voice, and the
changes in the genitals. Later, you
will start growing hair on your face,
chest, and under your arms. At first
the hair will be very fine. Some people
may call your first facial hair "peach
fuzz." Some boys will grow a lot of
hair and some will not. This is deter-
mined by the genes which carry the
blueprint for your body. Your father or
older brother can help you decide when
it is time to start shaving.
2Something else you will notice as
you mature is that you have an erection
many mornings when you wake up. This is
natural, and happens to all healthy
boys] and men. The erection will go
away as you get up and start your day.
It is nothing to worry about.
Many times, boys feel self-
conscious about their penis size. If
you mature faster than your friends,
you may feel funny about having your
penis and scrotum growing so fast. If
you mature slower than your friends,
you may feel very funny about growing
so slowly. Many boys get teased by
other boys who don't understand that
everyone grows at the time determined
for them by their genes. Remember that
every boy will see his penis and scro-
tum grow; there is nothing to do to
speed up or slow down this process.
Many of the girls you know are
waiting for their first periods. It is
not possible to tell when a girl will
be getting her first period. As her
hormones start to change, she may be-
come moody, or cry easily. She may also
notice a white fluid (discharge) coming
from her vagina. This does not neces-
sarily mean she will be getting her
period right away, though it does mean
her body is getting ready. A girl's
first period may be so light she may
not know she is having it.
3Girls do not have to limit their
activities when they have periods.]
They can go to school, play sports, or
do ballet or gymnastics. If they wear a
tampon, they can even go swimming.
*
2The changes that you are going through
are very private; you should not talk
to anyone about them.
$
1It is possible to get an erection
without thinking about sex or playing
with your penis.
$
2When having her period, the girl or
woman needs to take it easy and not get
too much exercise.

This lesson will talk some more
about the way you feel and the things
you do during puberty. Puberty can be a
confusing time, with lots of mixed
feelings. But it can also be a wonder-
ful time as you see yourself growing
up.
Getting used to the changes in your
body may take some time and patience.
1You may want to explore these changes
by looking at yourself in the mirror or
by masturbating. This is perfectly OK.]
As you learned before, your genitals
are your own private parts, and there
is no reason why you should not get to
know where they are, how they look, and
how they feel.
2Sometimes you may masturbate to
the point of orgasm.] An orgasm (or
climax) is an intense feeling (usually
pleasurable) that results from the
sudden release of tension. It usually
occurs at the point of ejaculation.
As you have already learned, many
boys are very concerned about their
penis size. You might compare penises
in the locker room or at other times
while changing clothes. This does not
mean you are homosexual; this is just
getting used to your new, grown-up
body. It is important to remember that
everyone matures at different rates.
Some boys will notice their genitals
maturing faster than others. This is
natural, and has nothing to do with how
"masculine" you will be or what you
will be like in the future.
Something else that is important to
know is that the size of the penis when
it is soft has nothing to do with the
size it will be when it is erect. In
fact, almost all men's penises are
about the same size when they are
erect, even if the sizes differ when
the penis is soft. Also, 3how tall or
muscular a man is has nothing to do
with how big his penis is.] Remember,
it is our old friend the gene that
determines how big the penis (or breast
for that matter) is.
*
2Masturbation is a "sick" thing to do.
$
2Masturbation always results in orgasm.
$
2It is easy to guess how big a guy's
penis is by looking at the rest of his
body.
